Ice Jam Monitoring

Overview

Lower Platte South NRD, Lower Platte North NRD, and Papio-Missouri River NRD, along with city, county and state emergency management administrations, the Department of Natural Resources, the Nebraska Army National Guard, the Corps of Engineers, the National Weather Service and USGS work cooperatively to monitor ice conditions on the Lower Platte River each winter.  Papio-Missouri River NRD takes the lead on measuring ice thickness, monitoring ice flows and if necessary puts into place emergency measures to reduce or relieve the flood threat caused by ice and ice james.  The LPRCA assists in coordination and communication regarding ice conditions each year.
